NSW Primary Industries’ exports surged 64% reaching a new record high of $10.9 billion during 2021-22 35 n u as a bumper grain crop combined with strong livestock prices. This was an extraordinary result given the previous year was also a record high. Exports were stronger for all NSW primary industries’ main commodities, especially broadacre crops. Exports were also stronger to all of NSW’s main trading partners led by Asian countries where exports surged by $3 billion to $7.5 billion.

Broadacre crop exports grew 130% to $5.9 billion and livestock exports grew 27%, to $4.6 billion, both record highs. 35 n This is the first time since 2012 that NSW’s major export sectors, livestock and broadacre crops have grown at the same time.

Exports of wheat grew 109% to just under $3 billion to surpass beef as NSW Primary Industries’ largest export for the first time since 2013. 35 All major commodities achieved strong export growth, with the highlights being oilseeds (+125%), cotton (+249%) and other grains (primarily rice, barley and sorghum, +347%). Beef and sheepmeat also achieved growth despite production challenges as producers continued to rebuild the herd and flock rebuild, primarily due to strong export prices.

Exports to all major markets increased with China maintaining its position as NSW’s top export market destination for the 13th consecutive year. However, the standout market was Vietnam, where exports surged 195% to over $1.1 billion, primarily due to large increases in wheat and cotton exports. 35 n Vietnam surpassed the United States, Japan and South Korea to become the second largest destination for NSW Primary Industries’ exports. 35 n Exports to Indonesia also increased significantly to overtake Japan as NSW’s fourth largest market as exports of wheat continued to recover and due to record high cotton exports. European markets also performed well primarily due to a significant increase in exports of canola for biofuel production.

Asia is the largest destination for NSW Primary Industries’ exports taking 68% of the total. 35 Higher grain/canola exports and lower red meat exports to the United States meant Europe overtook the Americas as the next biggest destination with 12% of total exports, up from 5% in 2019-20. 35
