March 2024

Plant Growth Index (PGI)

The PGI remains stable.

  • Many areas have seen a good pasture growth response to rainfall throughout March.
  • Many areas, particularly in southern and western NSW remain in a strong production position going into autumn.
  • Below average but effective timing of rainfall over the past two months has the PGI much higher than the Soil Water (SWI) and Rainfall Index (RI) in some regions, for example Mudgee and northeast of Singleton.
  • For some regions, low soil moisture levels may be limiting crop and pasture growth rates in dryland production systems.
  • Continued follow up rainfall over the coming 6-8 weeks is needed to continue improving the PGI values.
