Murray Local Land Services

Murray region production outlook remains strong.

  • The Combined Drought Indicator shows approximately 97% of Murray Local Land Services (LLS) region remains in the Non-Drought category at the end of March.
  • Rainfall during March has been below average when compared to long term averages for much of the region. This, coupled with warm temperatures has resulted in a declined in the underlying indicators, particularly in the east of the region.
  • Parts of the region have signs of drying, with small area east of Holbrook entering the Drought Affected category this month.
  • Producers continue to monitor forecasts closely and implement management strategies as required for their enterprises.
  • The NSW DPI continues to closely monitor conditions in this region.

Normalised Difference Vegetation Index

Plant greenness values have remained generally steady since the February Update.

  • Many areas continue to experience near normal to higher-than-normal plant greenness levels.
  • Indications of preparation for winter cropping and irrigation programs can be seen.
  • Some of the extremely negative NDVI areas (brown patches) are water bodies.

Individual Drought Indicators

Drought indicators remain strong due to rainfall over recent months.

  • The Drought History charts show the individual response of the drought indicators for Finley, Holbrook and Moulamein.
  • At Finley, the indicators continue to respond well to recent rainfall.
  • At Holbrook, the drought indicators have declined over the last few weeks. Without further rainfall, the region will likely transition into the Drought Affected category in the coming weeks.
  • At Moulamein, all indicators are responding well to rainfall events over the summer and early autumn period.
