May 2024

Northern Tablelands Local Land Services

Drought conditions continue to ease for much of the region.

  • The Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) shows approximately 77% of the region being in a drought category at the end of May.
  • Average to above average rainfall during May has seen a gradual improvement in drought conditions across much of the region. However, rainfall totals have been highly variable, leading to differing rates of recovery. Longer term rainfall deficits (since the beginning of 2024) remain for some regions.
  • Further rainfall is needed to aid longer term improvement in conditions.
  • The NSW DPI continues to closely monitor conditions in this region.

Normalised Difference Vegetation Index

Plant greenness levels have remained generally stable since the last Update.

  • Plant greenness levels are highly variable across the region with May rainfall above average to above average.
  • Some areas still have below average levels of plant greenness. These areas indicate where pasture growth may be slowing and becoming dormant as cooler temperatures are experienced.
  • Some of the extremely negative NDVI areas (brown patches) are water bodies.

Individual Drought Indicators

Drought indicators remain steady across the region.

  • The drought indicators have not shown a strong response to recent rainfall and the underlying indicators remain low.
  • Further rainfall will be needed to trigger a significant improvement in the indicators and help build a longer term recovery for many parts of the region.
