Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)

The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is currently neutral.

  • The latest weekly value of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) index to 28 May 2024 was +0.38°.
  • Four of the five international climate models surveyed by the Bureau of Meteorology suggest positive IOD conditions in June.  Positive IOD conditions are typically associated with less rainfall than usual over parts of Australia.
  • Model accuracy has historically been low at this time of year. Outlooks beyond June should be viewed with caution.
  • The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is the difference in sea surface temperatures between the eastern and western tropical Indian Ocean.
