Training ground for new leaders

More than 20 Forestry Corporation workers will go back to their regions across New South Wales next week armed with new leadership skills after a training course in Coffs Harbour.

The team leader and supervisor training course is part of Forestry Corporation supervisor development program for 2004.

The pilot course was conducted with South East Region Forestry Corporation staff at Batemans Bay earlier in the month.

“The course has been designed to help team leaders and supervisors identify and develop key people skills,” said Forestry Corporation training manager Gaye Scully.

“It will help the participants accept responsibility, set performance requirements, maintain team performance and act as a team leader when required.”

The course is linked to a nationally recognised competency standard.

“Participants undertook written and practical activities which were assessed by the facilitators,” Gaye said.

“On successful completion of these activities, the participants will be issued with a statement of attainment which can contribute towards a formal qualification in front-line management.”

People skills reinforced at the course included communications, listening, assertiveness, giving and receiving feedback, performance counselling, conflict resolution, motivation and team building.

Other participants came from Wauchope, Taree, Gloucester , Casino, Grafton, Coffs Harbour , Inverell, Forbes and Batemans Bay.
