Overview

The honeybee industry is worth $8.35 billion in Australia and US$235-577 billion globally.

Challenge

Beekeepers require cost effective and safe tools to manage small hive beetle to avoid risks of honey production losses, bee deaths or pesticide contamination of honey products. in meeting consumer expectations.

Current issues are:

• pest control options are declining, in part due to insects developing resistance, and fewer replacement options are being provided
• increasing regulatory pressures and older chemistries may no longer comply with current health and environmental standards
• there is increasing pressure to reduce the use of chemicals in the production of food and agriculture generally.

Solution

APITHOR ™ is a Hive Beetle Harbourage disposable device, incorporating an insecticide-treated corrugated cardboard sheet, that can be easily inserted and removed from standard beehives without the need to open or dismantle the hive and through its unique design allows the control of small hive beetle without the risk of unintended insecticide contamination or bee death.

Opportunity

Ensystex Australasia (exclusive licensee) NSW Agriculture and Biosecurity and AgriFutures are seeking interest from companies with abilities to assist with further product development, which could include integration with other solutions, as well as commercialisation. We are specifically looking for capability to advance international commercialisation.
