The Sheep and Goat eID Tag Discount Program has commenced!
The new program will provide a discount of $0.76 each (incl GST) for 2025 NLIS-accredited white eID devices. Purchase your eID tags or leg bands from your preferred retailer to take advantage of the program. See below for more details.
The NSW Government has announced an eID Tag Discount Program that will assist sheep and goat producers transition to mandatory individual eID from 1 January 2025.
The new program will provide a discount of $0.76 each (incl GST) for 2025 NLIS-accredited white eID devices when purchased from a retailer or manufacturer between 1 November 2024 to 31 October 2025 (or until funds are exhausted). This includes eID tags and leg bands.
The discount can be applied on one order per PIC. Multiple orders are allowed for orders greater than 3500 devices, with pre-approval.
To take advantage of the eID tag discount program
You need to:
- Purchase white 2025 NLIS-accredited devices (tags or leg bands) from your preferred retailer
- Select eID devices that are sheep or goat species coded (ie specific to either sheep or goats)
- Purchase eID devices between 1 November 2024 to 31 October 2025 (or until funds are exhausted)
- Obtain pre-approval if you require more than 3500 devices under the program. Please see below for more details on what orders require pre-approval and the process.
How to prepare
- Wait until after 1 November to purchase tags for the 2025 calendar year to access the discount.
- Plan when you will purchase your tags, keeping in mind that only one order per Property Identification Code (PIC) is eligible for the discount
- Be aware that funding may be exhausted before the program closes.
- Consider how many lambs and/or kids are likely to be born in 2025. If it is more than 3500, plan to gain pre-approval prior to ordering the devices.
- Ensure you have all the required information for pre-approval ready, including your PIC number, PIC manager name, email, contact number, address, brand of tags to be ordered, species, number of devices to be ordered, and whether multiple orders will be required.
- If you have any queries, contact your regional LLS Senior Biosecurity Officer (eID) who can support you in making decisions on when and how many tags you should purchase for your operation. Orders that require pre-approval
- Orders of over 3500 eID devices
- If you are requesting pre-approval to purchase more than 3500 discounted eID devices, you can also request these to be split over more than one order if required (eg for split lambings).
Remember, if you are ordering under 3500 devices, you do not require pre-approval.
Unsure if you require pre-approval? You can email the Sheep and Goat Traceability team at sheepgoateid@dpi.nsw.gov.au
Pre-approval process
To verify that bulk orders are required for business purposes and to reduce any instances of over-purchasing, the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will conduct background checks using Annual Stock and Land Return data. Applicants will be asked to provide supporting information when a request cannot be verified using available datasets.
- Complete the online form for pre-approval.
- Wait for a response from the DPIRD Sheep and Goat Traceability team. Please allow for 3-5 business days for your application to be processed
- Once you have received your pre-approval certificate (via email), you will need to provide it with the order of the devices to prove eligibility. Manufacturers and retailers will only fulfil orders of more than 3500 devices with a pre-approval certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)
What will eID tags cost?
All eligible tags will have the 76c discount applied on the final sale price. Based on current market pricing, tags should be available to NSW sheep and goat producers from $1, depending on the choice of manufacturer and tag type.
How will this tag discount be paid to producers?
This device discount program is structured to ensure that producers gain the maximum benefit with the least amount of administrative responsibility. The discount will be applied at the point of sale, arranged directly with device manufacturers and retailers and minimising paperwork for producers.
Sheep and goat producers in NSW will need to have an active Property Identification Code (PIC) and purchase eligible devices between 1 November 2024 to 31 October 2025 from participating retailers or directly with manufacturers to receive the discount.
The discount will assist sheep and goat owners transition to the use of eID from 1 January 2025, and support the implementation of this key industry reform, ultimately enhancing traceability and biosecurity across the sheep and goat industry
What will happen if manufacturers or retailers decide to price gouge or not pass on the discount to producers?
NSW DPI will work with the manufacturers and retailers of eID devices to ensure that all of the benefits of this assistance are delivered to producers. This will be monitored and any manufacturers or retailers that attempt to take advantage of this support package will lose the competitive advantage that this discount provides for their products.
It is noted that in other states where similar tag discount programs have been implemented, there has not been an increase in prices, with some states anecdotally highlighting competitive downward pressure on prices.
Can I access the discount at my local retailer or do I have to buy the tags directly from the manufacturer?
You can buy the eID tags directly from your local retailer or online (from your retailer or the manufacturer). The discount has been applied to manufacturers so customers can access it at their preferred retailer or manufacturer directly.
Will other eID devices eg. leg bands be included in the discount program or is it just tags?
NLIS accredited eID leg bands will be included in the discount program.
How do I know which devices are eligible for the discount?
All NLIS-accredited white eID devices for sheep or goats will receive a $0.76 (incl GST) discount in the program period until funds are exhausted. If you are unsure whether the devices you wish to purchase are eligible, ask your retailer.
Are year of birth colours mandated in NSW?
No, year of birth colours are not mandatory in NSW. However, only white 2025 eID devices are eligible under the NSW Sheep and Goat eID Tag Discount Program. This is to prevent producers purchasing excessive numbers of eID devices under the program thereby reducing the total funds available for other producers.
Who will apply the discount?
Eligible eID devices from all retailers and manufacturers will have the discount applied at point of sale. This means when you go online or into your local retailer, the price of the devices that are eligible under the program will already be 76c less (inc GST) than the original retail price.
Can I make more than one order and receive the discount?
No, the discount applies to only one order per Property Identification Code (PIC) (except where pre-approval is provided for multiple purchases, on orders over 3500 tags). This is to reduce administrative complexity and cost. NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will be conducting audits throughout the program to ensure that only one discounted order per PIC has been placed.
How do I provide my pre-approval certificate with my order?
Resellers and retailers will require your pre-approval certificate to fulfil your order -how they wish to receive this will differ from company to company. Online merchants may have an upload function, local stores may prefer you to forward it to their email or bring in a printed copy to scan. The easiest way is to ask your retailer what method they would prefer.
What happens if my pre-approval is rejected?
If your pre-approval is not approved, you may be requested to submit supporting information to the the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development Sheep and Goat Traceability team for further assessment.
However, if your pre-approval is rejected due to not having a genuine business need, you will only be able to purchase one order of discounted eID devices of less than 3,500 tags
What kind of supporting information can I provide to verify pre-approval numbers if more information has been requested?
If your request cannot be verified against Property Identification Code (PIC) data, you may need to provide details of previous tag purchases, NLIS movement data, or sales receipts for animals sold in previous years. The NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development Sheep and Goat Traceability Team will contact producers where pre-approval cannot be verified using available datasets.
How much money has been allocated to the $0.76c device discount?
The NSW Government has allocated $10.2 million for the eID device discount program to support the state’s sheep and goat producers with a $0.76 (incl GST) per tag discount for lambs and goat kids born in NSW in 2025.
How did the NSW Government decide to offer a 76c discount program?
The $0.76c discount reflects the available funds allocated across the forecast 2025 lamb and kid drop.
The forecast number of lambs and goat kids are based on MLA and ABS data for lamb numbers in 2025, and data from goat abattoirs and NLIS movements for kid numbers.
I don't know how many eID tags I will need for my 2025 lambs/kids. When should I purchase my tags to get the discount?
This is an individual business decision that would need to factor in aspects such as when your lambs or kids are born, when you intend to tag with eIDs, access to pre-lamb/kid scanning data, your management practices and seasonal conditions etc. While program funding has been based on the best available estimates of the numbers of lambs and kids born in NSW in 2025, it is possible that funds will be exhausted within the program prior to the end date. Accordingly, it is recommended that producers purchase their eID devices as soon as lamb or kid numbers are known.
