Interactive Game Fish Tagging Maps

The Game Fish Tagging Program has produced interactive tag and release heat maps and recapture movement maps using a static dataset from 1 Jan 2000 to 31 Dec 2023. The data made available on these web maps is generated by recreational anglers who participate in the NSW DPIRD Game Fish Tagging Program.

The release data has been rounded to the nearest 5 nautical miles (NM) and grouped into 5x5 NM grid squares for display purposes .

Disclaimer. The data made available on this website is generated by anglers contributing as citizen-scientists and providing data whilst participating in the NSW DPIRD Game Fish Tagging Program. Although the data is screened, it may contain errors and may be incomplete.

Appropriate use and limitations of data. The data available is from a pre-set period (1 Jan 2000 to 31 Dec 2023) and excludes certain species and/or suspect data, this means that comparisons with other datasets may produce different or varying results. The data is also subject to ongoing updates as validation work continues. Care should be taken when interpreting this data because there are many factors that can affect tagging participation, effort and catch.  This dataset does not include all data collected by the Game Fish Tagging Program (personal information, gear type etc.).  While citizen science data provides valuable insights that can significantly contribute to research outcomes, users should apply it with an understanding of its limitations.

A point-based version of this dataset can be downloaded from the Fisheries Spatial Data Portal.
