David Mitchell
David Mitchell is trained in soil science and surface hydrology. He joined NSW Agriculture* in 1992 as technical officer undertaking soil physical research, he spent three years at CSIRO Townsville undertaking a PhD in surface hydrology before returning to NSW Agriculture as a research officer and undertaking a variety of soil and water research roles in central west NSW.
David has led several large multidisciplinary research projects, specifically the Key Sites project. Key Sites is a state-wide project studying the various ways dryland salinity is expressed and the subsequent on farm management actions that can be taken to mitigate or reverse the effects of dryland salinity.
David is currently leading a multidisciplinary team that is determining the thresholds to agricultural activities on the interception of water as it relates to the sustainable diversion limits (SDL) under the Murray Darling Basin Plan.
*NSW Department of Primary Industries was formed on July 1, 2004 through an amalgamation of NSW Agriculture, NSW Fisheries, State Forests of NSW and the NSW Department of Mineral Resources.
