March 2024

Soil Water Index (SWI)

The SWI is variable across NSW.

  • Follow up rainfall through March has aided the continued improvement in the SWI for parts of NSW.
  • Much of southern NSW remains in a strong production position going into autumn.
  • Concerns about low soil moisture remains for many regions in NSW. Further rainfall is critical for longer-term drought recovery across the impacted areas in NSW.
  • NSW DPI is closely monitoring areas in the Central Tablelands, Central West, Riverina and Murray LLS Regions where there is a declining trend in the SWI. Warm daytime and overnight temperatures, along with short-term rainfall deficits have contributed to this.
  • The impacts of early April rain event will not be evident in the SWI until the next update.
